... the thing about vinyl ...

Some notions about this enjoyable insanity:

First, sound quality depends on the recordings, mixes and the mastering; second, sound quality depends on the way the master and the pressings are made, and the products used to create the master and the copies.

Third, artists can chose between a single LP set, or a double LP set; they can chose to include 3 songs on one side or 4 songs on one side, regarding the lenght of the songs, etc.; fourth, to my knowledge, there are 12 minute-long masters, 18 minute-long masters and 24 minute-long masters, I'm not 100% certain though, they could vary; fifth, when pressing vinyl, artists may chose 120 gms, 180 gms, 200 gms or 220 gms vinyl, but these last three points are decided after finishing recording and mixing all the songs to be included in the album, they ones that will make it to the album will be mastered, and then the master is produced.

So, at the time of pressing, it is known that the heavier the better, that is to say, you could get a better sound quality with a heavier vinyl than with a lighter vinyl, in theory. However, all things considered, depending on the recordings, the mixes and the mastering, artists may get a good sound quiality on a 120 gms vinyl, or in the worst case, a lousy sound quiality on a 220 grams vinyl. For isntance, I heard someone saying that in his opinion the sound quality of Pearl Jam's Vitallogy first pressing is better that the reissue one.

Spinning has nothing to do with weight, both light and heavy 33 1/3 12" vinyl will spin at the same speed on the turntable, and for that matter, a 7" 45rpm will revolve at the same of a 12" 45rmp, it is not that the heavier vinyl will stall the turntable. If a 180 gms vinyl speeds slower than a 120 gms vinyl on 33 1/3 rpm it has nothing to do with the vinyl, it is a problem with the turntable.

And the reason why first pressing albums are way more expensive than the reissues is because they are first pressings, nothing else, it has nothing to do with sound quality or weight of the vinyl. It's because as they are first pressing they have acquired the status of collectible items.

Pen, paper, envelopes and stamps

Do people still write letters? On which occasions?

I've just finished one letter and one postcard. I have a special fountain pen to write on the sheets of paper, but a regular pen to write on the back of the postcards and the envelopes. I just write, whatever I've done so far, or whatever I''m about to do after finishing writing. I enjoy the exercise of trying to produce a legible handwriting, well form sentences and paragraphs, and stick to the standard letter structure, which is usually short, however I can write easily six pages of well groomed nonsense.

The fun thing is that I write to friends who I see regularly, and with one of my pen friends, who is a girl, we write each other both in Spanish and English, randomly, we may start the sentence in one language and finish it with the other. But what I enjoy the most is looking for envelopes and stamps. If you think you can find envelopes anywhere, you are right, but not the ones I like, they are a special brand, with not so common measures, and the paper is really something. And I have to go downtown to get the stamps, I buy the collectible kind one, they cost as much as the regular ones, but they are LIMITED EDITION, I have a stamp that only 4K copies have been issued, but since it is quite new, and not good at all, it won't reach a high price or raise any interest from anyone, but still, it's fun to go and buy stamps, lick them and stick them on the envelope. Curiously, I don't send season greetings letters, just whatever I feel like writing, whenever I feel like writing, to whoever I wanna send something too...

how about you?

A Life Wasted? Not at all

I don't remember the exact date when I bought my first album, in fact, cassette, it was in the mid 80's, but I remember it was Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. My dad had a Beatles compilation and since I worn it out I wanted more, so, the owner of the record shop suggested I should buy that one if I wanted the best Beatles album.

Since then I've been listening to all kinds of music and all kind of artists, and after all these years I have to say that Pearl Jam is my favourite band. Their music is so inspiring and insightful that I can relate myself to it, in any aspect, musical or lyrical. Their music has the quality to reach very deep inside onself, shrivering down my spine, shaking every nerve. And for that matter, I always was eager to get more of their music, and listen to every song as much as I can. So not only was I a Pearl Jam fan, but also a collector, specially vinyl collector, and for that reason, I could not pass buying this single, belonging to one of my favourite albums.

Being a 10C member gave me the possibility to listen to all shows they made. Life wasted was played a lot, in fact, it was one of the best song at Buenos Aires show last November, which I attended. So I grew a bigger love for this song which pushes you to set yourself to do something, go all the way through it, and don't give up, it always get better. Come back is one of many fans favs, but if you have the chance to watch the PJ20 DVD extras, you will love it. It's a pretty bad ass ballad, a love song, but not cheese, and the riffs and solos will blow your mind.

So if you haven't heard these songs, or Pearl Jam at all, these songs are a good start, if you like Pearl Jam, you should take your time to listen these two songs, you might have listened before, but now you will have another perspective, and you will learn why most fans love these songs, and if you are a Pearl Jam fan and collector, this single, Life wasted b/w Come back (live), is a must, and you know it!

hermosos juntos
imperfectos separados

hermosos juntos
imperfectos separados.

... working class hero ...

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty hard years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

... vuelta por el universo ...

Hoy que estas esplendida
y que todo te ilumina
demos un paseo

Vuelta por el universo
pide algun deseo

Nuestras almas al volar
son las nubes mas brillantes...
turbulencias...

Y entre planetas navegar...
Vuelta...
Alto, cada vez mas alto

... slide away ...

Slide away, and give it all you've got
My today, fell in from the top
I dream of you, and all the things you say
I wonder where you are now?

Hold me down, cause all the world's asleep
I need you now, you've knocked me off my feet,
I dream of you, we talk of growing old
But you said please don't...

Slide in baby, together we'll fly
I've tried praying, but I don't know what you're saying to me

Now that you're mine
We'll find a way
Of chasing the sun
Let me be the one, that shines with you
in the morning, I don't know what to do
two of a kind
We'll find a way
To do what we've done
Let me be the one, that shines with you
And we can slide away, slide away, slide away, away...

Slide away, and give it all you've got
My today, fell in from the top
I dream of you, and all the things you say
I wonder where you are now?

Slide in baby, together we'll fly
I've tried praying, and I know just what you're saying to me

Now that you're mine
We'll find a way
Of chasing the sun
Let me be the one that shines with you
in the morning when you don't know what to do
two of a kind
We'll find a way
To do what we've done
Oh, let me be the one
That shines with you, and we can slide away...

Slide away, slide away, slide away, slide away
(and I wanna try now, i wanna make you mine now)
Slide away, slide away, slide away, slide away
(and I wanna try now, i wanna make you mine now)
Slide away, slide away, slide away, slide away
(and I wanna try now, i wanna make you mine now)

I don't know, I don't care, all I know is you can take me there
I don't know, I don't care, all I know is you can take me there
I don't know, I don't care, all I know is you can take me there
I don't know, I don't care, all I know is you can take me there
I don't know, I don't care, all I know is you can take me there
(Slide away...)
Take me there

... quiero estar entre tus cosas ...

Quiero entrar
en tus cosas revisar
abrir cada cuaderno
y dejarlo en su lugar ahh
Y buscar
en tu libro de secretos del mar
dale guarda tus juguetes
y verlos funcionar.
Ahhh ah oh ahhhhh ah ah
Quiero estar entre tus cosas
ah ah ah...
Quiero estar entre tus cosas...
Caminar
a oscuras en la sala y encontrar
notas olvidadas y sentir que sos fatal.
ah oh ah ah ah
Quiero estar entre tus cosas

... calvas margaritas ...

Calvas margaritas
docenas de cabezas porfiadas
Calvas margaritas calvas
me quiere mucho, poco, me quiere nada

Calvas margaritas
se que conocen bien nuestra suerte
Calvas margaritas calvas
tercas en soplarme que voy a perderte

Caigo tumbado sobre tanto “me quiere”
Aprieto el ramo intuyendo “no me quiere"
Blanco, amarillo y verde

Calvas margaritas
ramos completos con flores cargadas
Calvas margaritas calvas
flores de un solo pétalo
“me quiere nada”

Caigo tumbado sobre tanto “me quiere”
aprieto el ramo intuyendo “no me quiere”
Blanco, amarillo y verde

Calvas margaritas
docenas de cabezas porfiadas
Calvas margaritas calvas
Me quiere mucho, poco, me quiere nada
